What It's Like to Work at AOG
AOG does hiring differently—on purpose.
Our process is designed to be neurosensitive, humane, low-pressure, and transparent.
Not everyone who finds this page is ready to work with AOG yet — and that's okay. Many people start by joining the community, sharing ideas, or getting involved in smaller ways first.
This guide walks you through what to expect at every step, from applying to actually doing the work.
📝 1. Application: No Résumés, No Games
We don't ask for résumés.
We believe you shine when you tell us:
- What you enjoy doing
- What experience you do have (formal or informal)
- What you'd like to learn
- Your current availability and energy
- How you like to work and communicate
There are no trick questions and no "gotcha" filters.
This is about fit, interest, and sustainability—not performance theater.
💬 2. Interview: A Conversation, Not a Test
Our interviews are:
- Informal
- Conversational
- Typically just one meeting
Think of it as a mutual "does this feel good?" discussion.
During the interview, we usually talk about:
- The role and what kinds of tasks it includes
- What you are interested in and enjoy doing
- Any relevant experience (paid, volunteer, lived, or self-taught)
- Your availability and preferred pace
- How the pod/team structure works
- Any support or flexibility you might need
👉 You can request additional conversations if you want more time to think, ask questions, or feel things out. That's always okay.
✨ 3. Offer: Often Made During the Interview
In most cases, we co-create and offer the role during the interview if it feels like a good mutual fit.
If there are multiple applicants:
- We will always tell you upfront
- We may take a short amount of time to compare fit across candidates
Once an offer is made:
- You'll receive clear information about pay, expectations, and scope
- You'll usually have a few business days to decide
- More time is always available upon request
No pressure. No exploding offers. No awkward follow-ups required.
🧾 4. Hiring: Simple, Informal, and Practical
Our hiring process is intentionally lightweight.
Typically, we:
- Collect bank account information for electronic payments
- Complete required tax paperwork (as applicable)
- Set you up for monthly payment
An AOG email address:
- Is optional
- Provided based on role, preference, and level of involvement
- Not required for most contract roles
Otherwise, we just ask that you:
- Stay in reasonable contact when needed
- Let us know if your availability changes
That's it.
🧠 5. Job Expectations: Built for Real Brains
💼 Structure
- You'll be part of a Pod (a small team in a shared area like social media or admin)
- Responsibilities overlap on purpose
- No one person is critical or irreplaceable
⏰ Time & Pace
- Work happens ONLY:
- When work is available
- When you are available
- In the way that works best for you
This is a retainer-style contract, not a clock-watching job.
🛑 Stepping Back Is Allowed
You can:
- Take breaks
- Reduce capacity
- Step back temporarily
- Bow out for personal reasons
…and still remain on contract staff.
We just ask for communication when possible. That's it.
🌱 Growth & References
If you want:
- More responsibility over time
- Skill-building
- A future reference
- A pathway to bigger roles
We're happy to support that—at your pace.
🤝 Boundaries & Shared Guidelines
To keep this system healthy:
- Communication matters more than availability
- Perfection is not expected
- Mistakes are normal
- Burnout is something we design against
- Respect, consent, and mutual care are core values
This is not hustle culture.
This is not urgency theater.
This is not "prove your worth."
It's collaborative, flexible, and intentionally human.
💛 In Short
Working with AOG means:
- Paid, low-pressure, meaningful work
- Flexibility without punishment
- Clear expectations
- Room to be human
- Doing things you like with people you like for a cause you believe in
If that sounds good—we'd love to meet you.
