Beyond Access: How to Build Truly Inclusive Event Spaces

Inclusive Spaces

This presentation explains why inclusion is more than invitation—and how exclusion causes real harm (sensory overwhelm, communication barriers, stigma, isolation, and erasure) when events are designed primarily for neurotypical and able-bodied people.

We cover an “inclusion scale” mindset shift, why language matters (“ask, listen, don’t other”), and how to support diverse communication styles beyond speech (ASL, gestures, written options, processing time, visuals, assistive tools).

Participants learn what sensory-friendly spaces look like in practice (quiet/decompression zones, lighting/sound options, clear signage/expectations) and why these supports help everyone.

We close with the core principle: participation, not just presence—invite Autistic people and people with disabilities into planning, leadership, and performance; don’t tokenize; and pay people for their time and expertise.

  • Inclusion vs “accessible on paper”
  • Communication access (multiple formats, processing time, visuals)
  • Sensory-friendly design (quiet space, lighting/sound, signage)
  • Predictability tools (agendas, expectations, clear instructions)
  • Staff/volunteer training for neurosensitive hosting
  • Participation not tokenism (invite Autistic/disabled planners + pay expertise)
  • Feedback loops and continuous improvement checklist

  • Event planners and organizers
  • Nonprofits and community groups hosting gatherings
  • Venues, staff, volunteers, and security teams
  • Employers hosting trainings/retreats
  • Schools and conference organizers
  • Anyone who wants sensory-friendly + communication-inclusive events that feel genuinely welcoming
